It's really great gossip about the weirdness of people, not too much about knitting. Promise.

A couple of years ago, there were two fairly popular online knitting/yarn people. G made special little bags for carrying sock knitting in and had some interesting free/for sale sock knitting patterns. D had a hand-dying yarn business that was both inexpensive and popular.

G started having problems keeping up with orders. She explained that she'd recently been diagnosed with Lupus, which was getting in the way of her business.

D, meanwhile, had a booming business. So booming, in fact, that she couldn't keep up with the most basic quality control. She felted some of her yarns (which meant they couldn't be used) and most of the rest, all the dye would wash out of the yarn. So her customers were paying for a dye job that was beautiful, as long as they didn't touch, use or breathe on the yarn. If people complained on Ebay, she blasted them with negative feedback, and then buried the complaints in artificially generated positive feedback. She got kicked off another selling umbrella site (like Ebay) for misrepresenting her business, browbeating her customers and selling a crap product.

G was getting worse, sicker and farther behind on orders. She died in the beginning of 2008. There was a great deal of mourning on knitting sites. Her husband continued to make her sock patterns available , explaining that he was giving the proceeds to charity. People sent flowers, hand made socks to the kids, etc.

Soon after this, D conveniently died, too. People immediately suspected she'd faked her death. Another shop appeared on Ebay, with a different name, but the same crap yarn, the same color schemes, the same customer service. Emails were sent by D supposed husband, brother and sister, but they didn't seem to be able to consistently spell their own names. Stories changed. But D was still dead.

Knitters meanwhile were angry that they'd been gyped. They started doing some research, to find out if D had really died. They checked the social security system. They called hospitals. They dogpiled on a poor yarn dyer who lived in the next town over, but was able to prove that she wasn't D. She was really pissed at D, because her business was tanking because of the scandal. They find other sites and sellers that seem to be D in Disguise. So the Poor Yarn Dyer got D's address and drove by. Other people drove by. A woman was seen in D's yard on many occasions, hanging yarn to dry. The Poor Yarn Dyer actually saw D in the local bank, and watched her drive off in a brand new car. They call her names, and say she's tarnishing G's memory by pretending to die (and pretending to dye, as well. You wouldn't believe the puns.) They talk about zombies, they talk about revenge, they talk about lawsuits.

Finally some wise people compile the evidence and call not only the Better Business Bureau, but also the FBI. Both organizations take this very seriously and have started to build cases against D, the Zombie Dyer. She can't dye, and won't stay dead.

But everyone feels better and vindicated. They've really enjoyed the ride. They're all ready to calm down and remember G on the 1 yr anniversary of her death.

But, scandal! G's not dead, either! Really! OMG, OMG, OMG! How come it took us so long to notice? She was even dumber than D and, boy, that's saying something. Turns out G faked her own death on the internet, too. Everyone's really concerned about the patterns they bought for charity. Some good, well-meaning people with the world's most popular knitting site had promoted G's patterns for charity; now there's some concern that they could be sued for fraud. Nobody wants to sue the good, well-meaning people, though. They wanna beat G into the ground. They know how to do it, too. They've just wrapped up doing this with D, after all.

They've discover that G started a new business called Narcissistic Something-or-other. The Narcissistic part's right (even though my memory's failing me on the rest) and ironic as all get out. G also named herself after Narcissa Malfoy, the mom of Harry Potter's bad-boy rival, Draco Malfoy. So "Miss Cissy" seems to have totally forgotten basic fake-your-death-on-the-internet etiquette. She used the "dead" G's same email address to set up accounts for "Miss Cissy". Since "Miss Cissy" wrote the same kind of sock patterns as G, it's understandable that G's sock fans would find "Miss Cissy" and ultimately, the shared email address. "Miss Cissy" also posted pics of herself and her tattoos. Amazingly, the tattoos were identical to G's and in the same places.

I haven't heard that the FBI's involved with G, yet.

Hope you didn't think knitting was boring!

Have I wasted enough of your time? ;)

Welcome

Teh Rulz

1.
